BIS establishes specialized textiles testing lab in Hyderabad
National standards body the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has established a laboratory exclusively for the testing of specialised textile products in Hyderabad.
The laboratory will play a vital role in strengthening the quality ecosystem in the textile sector with its state-of-the-art testing facilities, BIS director general Pramod Kumar Tiwari said at the inauguration of the lab in Moulali here on Monday (January 27, 2025).
Setting up of the specialised textiles testing laboratory in Hyderabad is a significant step in strengthening the country’s quality infrastructure. It is poised to play a critical role in enforcing quality control orders (QCOs) issued by the government of India, ensuring textile products meet the highest national standards, he said.
Testing facilities for yarn will also be operational in this laboratory shortly, further expanding its capabilities. Besides inaugurating the laboratory, Mr. Tiwari also launched a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) for textile testing, a versatile tool for assessing the quality and durability of various textile products, the BIS said in a release on Wednesday (January 29, 2025).
The specialised textiles testing laboratory is in the same building where a gold testing laboratory - where the yellow metal samples are tested for purity - is located. The latter is instrumental in ensuring the authenticity and standardisation of gold products in the market, he said.
Officials present at the inauguration ceremony reiterated the importance of opting for ISI-marked products, which guarantee adherence to BIS standards and ensure safety, reliability, and durability. The Hyderabad branch laboratory is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing India’s textile standards, supporting manufacturers in enhancing their product quality, and contributing to the overall growth of the textile industry. Senior BIS officials, including deputy director general (Laboratories) Nishat Sultana Haque; DDG (Southern Region) and Head-Southern Regional Laboratory and Hyderabad Branch Laboratory Meenakshi Ganesan and Head-Hyderabad Branch Office Srikanth as well as heads of BIS laboratories from across India participated in the programme.
