Bernie Sanders Torches Trump Over Greenland Fiasco: 'This Is Just Very, Very Crazy'

The Vermont independent told Stephen Colbert that the territory could remain unscathed if one particular group gets their act together.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Tuesday said Greenland stands a chance of remaining an autonomous territory within the kingdom of Denmark despite ongoing threats of a forcible takeover from President Donald Trump — but only if congressional Republicans take action.
“I’m not a great fan of my Republican colleagues, but I think that for a variety of reasons, including self-preservation, I think there are about 8% of the American people [who] think invading Greenland is a good idea,” Sanders told “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert.
He continued, “So you don’t want to campaign on that, and I think some of my Republican colleagues are understanding that this is just very, very crazy and not something that can be supported.”
Trump first floated the idea during his first term, but revisited the plan more aggressively after bombing Venezuela, capturing its now-ousted leader Nicolás Maduro and letting U.S. oil companies run roughshod over the nation’s unmatched reserves.
Colbert agreed with Sanders that invading a fellow member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is “crazy,” arguing the threat alone “sounds like the death of NATO,” but challenged his premise that Republicans would prioritize this over their fealty to Trump.
