Dhiraj had lost lakhs of rupees he invested in the stock market. To repay the loans he had taken, he decided to rob a bank and escaped with 1.8 kg of gold jewellery and Rs 3.7 lakh. Police arrested him when he went to repay the money to his friend.

Dhiraj, a 28-year-old engineer from Bengaluru was arrested by police for robbing a bank and escaping with 1.8 kg gold jewellery and Rs 3.7 lakh cash. The incident took place on January 14 at the Madiwala branch of the State Bank of India.

A special team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Madiwala Sub-division Sudhir M Hegde managed to crack the case and arrest Dhiraj. Police sources say that the accused is a resident of Kamakshipalya. He lived with his father and younger brother.

Dhiraj had invested lakhs of rupees in the stock market but incurred massive losses. He took loans from banks and even pawned gold jewellery belonging to his late mother. He now had to repay the loans. So, he decided that robbing a bank would be the start.

He chose the Madiwala branch of SBI and spent two days observing the bank.

On January 14, at around 6 in the evening, wearing a mask, he stormed inside the bank with a knife. He forced the bank staff to fill his bag with cash and jewellery and then fled the scene. He then went to Andhra Pradesh before heading back to Bengaluru to avoid anyone following him.

Police, with the help of surveillance camera footage, and also a suspicious call from the nearest mobile tower to the bank, secured a photo of Dhiraj. This is when they discovered about his losses and the loans he had to repay many people.

When the accused went to visit his friend’s home in Yelahanka to repay the money, a police team present there arrested him.
