IPL 2022: BCCI secretary Jay Shah said most of the franchise owners have expressed interest in hosting the tournament in India. He also said the new season will get underway in March last week and run until May end.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on Saturday said that most of the franchise owners have expressed interest to host Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 in India. Shah also said that the board will work towards having the matches played at home after the last two editions were shifted out of the country due to Covid-19 crisis.

Speaking after a virtual meeting with franchise owners and the IPL governing council members, Jay Shah also confirmed that IPL 2022 will get underway from the last week of March and run until the final week of May. IPL 2022 will be a 10-team affair as two new teams, one each from Lucknow and Ahmedabad, were added to the popular T20 tournament.

The IPL 2022 mega auction will also be held on February 12 and 13, according to Shah who also said the board will take a call on the venues before the auction.

"I am delighted to confirm that the 15th season of the IPL will start in the last week of March and will run until May end. A majority of the team owners expressed their wish that the tournament be held in India," Shah was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, Shah also said that the BCCI will work towards plan B when it comes to hosting the tournament, considering the changing situation with regards to the Covid-19 pandemic. Quitte a few Indian states have enforced curfews to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the wake of the emergence of the Omicron variant.

"BCCI has not compromised on the health and safety of its stakeholders in the past & will concurrently work on Plan B since COVID19 situation with new variants remains fluid," he added.

"The BCCI was always keen on staging the 2022 edition that will see two new teams Ahmedabad and Lucknow in India. I can tell you that we will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that IPL stays in India."
