Bathurst started the new year with a brand new transit service.
Three 24-passenger buses are now offering door-to-door service to residents who, until now, had to use taxis to get around the northern New Brunswick city.
Mayor Kim Chamberlain was thrilled to ride the bus the day it launched.
“It’s a great day. I can’t even tell you how happy I am,” she said of the new service, which aims to provide affordable transportation, particularly for students and seniors.
Chamberlain said it will also benefit employers who are trying to attract workers.
"We do have more and more people moving to Bathurst, one of the things that they look at is public transportation, and we actually have it now," she said.
"So, it's definitely going to help with our retention of our citizens."
The Bathurst region is the latest northern New Brunswick community to launch their on-demand public transit. The buses are pre-booked through an app and offer rides for a flat $5 fee across the city.
