Vishwa Fernando batted two balls before retiring hurt at Tea on Day 2. He again came out to bat after Nayeem Hasan got the wicket of Asitha Fernando.

Sri Lanka batter Vishwa Fernando, on Monday, May 16, had to retire hurt after getting hit on the helmet by a deadly bouncer from Shoriful Islam during his team’s opening Test against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury in Chattogram. In the fourth ball of the 140th over, Shoriful dug the ball halfway down the track, after which Fernando failed to get out of the line of the delivery.

Immediately, the hosts’ players surrounded him and checked on his well-being. The physiotherapist came out to treat him, after which Fernando resumed his innings. His helmet also had to be replaced as it got damaged to quite some extent. After playing out the last two balls before the tea break, Fernando retired out and didn’t come out to bat initially in the final session.

During this while, it was learned that the Sri Lankan team management didn’t ask for a concussion substitute. Asitha Fernando joined Angelo Mathews in the middle in the post-tea break. But after off-spinner Nayeem Hasan picked up a five-wicket haul by dismissing Asitha, Vishwa resumed his innings.

During his knock, Fernando also got a lifeline after Mushfiqur Rahim dropped him. Fernando tried to take the aerial route down the ground off left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan, but failed to get proper timing. Mushfiqur got both hands to the ball, but failed to complete the catch.
