India Today
Italy's T20 World Cup debut was rocked as captain Wayne Madsen dislocated his shoulder against Scotland in Kolkata. The injury forced him off early, leaving Italy sweating on his availability for the rest of the tournament.
Italy’s dream start to their maiden T20 World Cup campaign hit a cruel speed bump as captain Wayne Madsen dislocated his shoulder during their tournament opener against Scotland on February 9 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. A day that was supposed to be all about history and firsts suddenly came with a worrying injury cloud.
Madsen’s setback ruled him out of the rest of the match, a massive blow for Italy both on the field and in the dressing room. The 42-year-old is the side’s most experienced leader, and losing him in their very first World Cup outing is the kind of twist no debutant wants.
SCO vs ITA, T20 World Cup: Updates
According to initial updates, Italy’s medical team will now take a closer look at the shoulder dislocation, while also checking for any additional neck injury or signs of concussion. A clearer update on whether Madsen can play any further part in the World Cup is expected once those assessments are complete.
The moment came early in Scotland’s innings after Italy won the toss and Madsen opted to bowl first. In the fourth over, Scotland opener George Munsey found the boundary line, and Madsen threw himself into a dive in an attempt to cut it off.
Instead, the Italy skipper landed awkwardly and heavily on his left shoulder, immediately clutching it in pain. He was treated on the field before being helped off in visible discomfort, his injured arm strapped tightly to his body. He did not return for the remainder of the clash, leaving Italy with an anxious wait.
