At least two people are dead after a line of severe thunderstorms swept across the country, unleashing devastating tornadoes in the central United States.
A large tornado, rain and hail hit the small community of Lake Village in northwest Indiana leaving two people dead, officials announced early on March 11. Firefighters worked until 4 a.m. local time searching the damaged areas and located several "very injured people" and two dead, according to Lori Postma, a spokesperson for the Lake Village Volunteer Fire Department.
Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, and Postma said "miraculous" things have occurred. But the efforts were hindered by the darkness and weather overnight.
"We just need a little daylight," she said.
According to USA TODAY's outage tracker, nearly 30,000 customers are without power in Indiana and Illinois, where a large tornado was reported in Kankakee County. Severe hail was reported from Texas to Illinois, and flash flooding was being reported in Michigan.
