Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik wrote to PM Modi urging him to allow medical students who had to evacuate war-hit Ukraine to continue their studies in Indian colleges.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow medical students who had to evacuate war-hit Ukraine to continue their education in Indian institutions.

In a letter to PM Modi, Patnaik wrote, “In view of the situation in Ukraine, large number of medical students from Odisha and other parts of India had to return back home. The disruption in their studies is likely to continue until cessation of the hostilities and restoration of normalcy in their universities in Ukraine.”

The Odisha CM went on to add that the unprecedented crisis in Ukraine has the potential to disrupt the careers of thousands of young men and women who have already gone through the trauma of being in the war zone.

“I would, therefore, request for your urgent intervention with the National Medical Commission and the ministries concerned to enable and facilitate continuance of their studies in the medical colleges in India from the stage from which their studies in Ukraine have been disrupted on account of the war,” said Patnaik.

He assured that the Odisha government would lend its full support in this regard.

A large number of Indian medical students studying in Ukraine had to return home after Russia invaded the country and began shelling and bombarding major cities like Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa. More than 200 medical students have so far returned to Odisha since the war erupted.
