Alberta has ordered a review following the death of a 44-year-old man waiting in an Edmonton emergency department earlier this week.
Prashanth Sreekumar, a father and husband, died at Grey Nuns Community Hospital last Monday after experiencing chest pain and allegedly waiting nearly eight hours to see a doctor at the ER.
Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services Matt Jones said on social media Friday that he had directed Acute Care Alberta (ACA) to work with Covenant Health to review the circumstances and potential contributing factors of the death.
He said his ministry would support the review and work with ACA and Covenant Health to ensure appropriate actions are taken in response.
Premier Danielle Smith also shared the announcement on social media, adding her condolences to those expressed by Jones.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has begun an independent investigation, according to a statement from ACA.
CBC News Edmonton has no information about how busy the emergency department was that day. Covenant Health said in a statement that it was unable to provide comment on specifics for the care of a patient due to privacy reasons.
A family friend has set up a fundraiser for Sreekumar's family — three children aged three, 10 and 14, and his wife — to support them with ongoing needs.
In a GoFundMe fundraiser, the family has called for a transparent investigation and accountability.
