
AI chatbot aims to provide support for women with postpartum depression: 'A tool, not a replacement'

With about one in eight women experiencing postpartum depression, amid a shortage of mental health providers, researchers at the University of Texas are looking to bridge the gap with an AI chatbot.
In partnership with the nonprofit organization Postpartum Support International, the researchers are testing a new AI chatbot that will be available to women through a free app. "AI does not replace human empathy and support." The chatbot’s algorithm is trained to handle common postpartum questions and issues — such as trouble with personal connections and breastfeeding challenges.
