2nd Test: Asitha Fernando breaks Bangladesh’s backbone on Day 5 as Sri Lanka secure comprehensive win in Mirpur

Bangladesh lost wickets in clumps in the second session of Day 5 and managed to post a target of 29 for Sri Lanka to chase down at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Sri Lanka, on Friday, May 27, defeated Bangladesh by 10 wickets in the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. After twin centuries from Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal, the Tigers found themselves in dire straits, having found themselves four down at Stumps on Day 4.

In the opening session of the last day, Kasun Rajitha castled the in-form Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored a century in the first innings. From there on, Shakib Al Hasan and Liton Das showed some resistance and stitched together a partnership of 103 runs for the sixth wicket.

Liton scored a ton in the first innings and he backed it up with a 52-run knock. Shakib, on the other hand, showed attacking instincts and notched 58 at a strike rate of 80.55. Asitha Fernando separated the duo after he got rid of Das. A couple of overs later, the pacer pinned Shakib as well.

From there on, the Bangladesh innings went downhill and the hosts were bundled out for 169. Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, who was picked in place of an injured Nayeem Hasan, couldn’t make much of an impact either.

Fernando picked up a five-wicket haul after he nipped out Taijul Islam. The speedster pulled the curtains down on the innings after he picked up his sixth wicket in the form of Khaled Ahmed. Kasun Rajitha picked up a fifer in the first innings and he accounted for two scalps in the second.

The target of 29 was hardly going to challenge the in-form Sri Lankan batting unit. Oshada Fernando scored 16 runs off Taijul Islam’s first over, after which the visitors chased the target down in three overs.
