Yukon University president finishes term 'effective immediately,' school announces
CBC
There's been a shake-up at Yukon University, with the school's president for the last four years leaving without fanfare on Thursday.
A news release from the university on Thursday afternoon said that the school's board of governors and Dr. Lesley Brown "have agreed that Dr. Brown will conclude her term as president and vice-chancellor, effective immediately."
The release did not provide any other details about the reasons for Brown's departure. It says the university's board won't comment "out of respect for all parties and to maintain confidentiality."
Brown was named as the university's president and vice chancellor in 2021. Before that she was the provost and vice-president of academics at Calgary's Mount Royal University.
The Whitehorse-based school evolved from Yukon College to become Yukon University in 2020. Brown was at the helm last year when it was accepted as the 97th member of Universities Canada, a move she then heralded as the school's "final step" in its transition to a university.
In the school's news release on Thursday, the board thanked Brown and said she had "served the territory with distinction."
"Under Dr. Brown’s leadership, the university advanced key priorities in reconciliation and solidified its identity as a university grounded and defined in and by the North," the release states.
Dr. Shelagh Rowles, the school's provost, has been named interim president and vice-chancellor. She's been with the institution since 1991 and has "deep knowledge of the institution and our community," the release says.
