Yukon's new premier and cabinet have been sworn in, along with the other members of the territory's 36th Legislative Assembly.
Currie Dixon, 40, is now the territory's 12th premier and the first to be born in the territory.
Dixon and his cabinet were sworn in by commissioner Adeline Webber at a public ceremony on Saturday afternoon at the Yukon Art Centre in Whitehorse.
It marks a return to power for the Yukon Party after nine years as the Official Opposition under a Liberal government. Before that, the Yukon Party was in power for 14 years under former premiers Darrell Pasloski and Dennis Fentie.
Dixon's new cabinet includes a mix of experienced ministers who served in previous Yukon Party governments, along with some new faces. The new premier had an ample roster of MLAs to choose from, as the party won 14 of the legislature's 21 seats in the Nov. 3 election — making it the largest government caucus in Yukon history.
The cabinet includes:
Dixon also announced this week that he will nominate Whistle Bend North MLA Yvonne Clarke as Speaker. If elected by MLAs, she would become the first-ever Filipino Speaker in a Canadian legislature, the party says.
Opposition party MLAs were also sworn in earlier this week. The NDP, which doubled its seat count from three to six in this month's vote, is now the Official Opposition under Leader Kate White. The NDP last held that role when the Yukon Party was in government before 2016.
The only Liberal MLA — Debra-Leigh Reti of Vuntut Gwitchin — was also sworn in this week.
Speaking at a press conference following the ceremony, Dixon told reporters the next sitting of the legislative assembly will begin Dec. 8 in order to vote on the supplementary budget.
While Dixon gave few details on policy in his first address, he promised a "fundamental commitment to change" will drive the next government's decision-making.
