Police identified the suspect in a mass shooting in Austin, Texas. Officials are investigating whether the shooting was linked to terrorism.
Police in Austin have identified the suspect who allegedly opened fire outside a bar in the city's entertainment district early on March 1, leaving at least two people dead and more than a dozen others injured.
Gunfire broke out outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden, a popular bar in the West 6th Street stretch of Austin − known as the heart of the city's music and nightlife area, and for its food trucks, according to local media reports. Austin Police Department Chief Lisa Davis said that the suspect circled the bar several times in an SUV just before firing at people outside the bar with a pistol and then a rifle.
Police responded to the shooting at around 2 a.m. local time and fatally shot the suspect, Davis confirmed. The shooter was identified by police as Ndiaga Diagne, 53.
According to authorities and emergency medical personnel, at least two people were found dead at the scene, and 14 others were injured in the attack, with three remaining in critical condition. The victims have not yet been identified.
Law enforcement officials, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are reportedly investigating whether the shooting was linked to terrorism and motivated by joint U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran.
