U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a major new trade corridor linking Windsor and Detroit, unless the U.S. is 'fully compensated' for what he claims it has given Canada.
In a social media post Monday, Trump said the U.S. should own “at least one half” of the bridge, arguing the revenues generated by access to the U.S. market will be “astronomical.”
He also claimed Canada controls both sides of the crossing.
The bridge is publicly owned by Canada and the state of Michigan. While Canada financed construction, Michigan has spent hundreds of millions of dollars building supporting infrastructure on the U.S. side, with Canada using toll revenues set to recoup the costs.
Officials in Canada and Michigan pushed back, highlighting the bridge’s economic importance and decades of cross-border co-operation.
