'We're far from OK,' father of child killed in fatal Cambridge collision says after driver charged

The father of a three-year-old girl that was killed after being struck by a vehicle in Cambridge in mid-December says recent charges laid to the driver bring little comfort and relief.
"We're happy that charges have been finally laid, but knowing he's still out is something we're not happy with," Spencer MacDonald told CBC News.
"Knowing that this man had his holidays, his New Year and got to live his life like nothing happened is kind of crushing us."
On Thursday, Waterloo regional police charged a 75-year-old man with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death. The man, who police did not identify, was also issued a Highway Traffic Act ticket for having an obstructed windshield.
The charge and ticket were in connection to a fatal crash that happened near the Westgate Plaza on Cedar Street on Dec. 11 that involved a vehicle and two pedestrians.
The three-year-old girl and her mother, 31-year-old Shihan Shea, were sent to hospital. The girl died and Shea sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
MacDonald said he and his family have struggled since the fatal collision.
"We're far from OK, but we're trying our best to be OK. We're devastated," he said.
Shea's uncle, Bob Davison, told CBC News in December she had just moved to the area with her daughter in what was supposed to be "their new beginning."
MacDonald said he was hoping police were going to lay "heavier" charges to the driver, "charges more toward manslaughter."
MacDonald added his family is also waiting for more information and clarity from police as to what happened on Dec. 11.
"It seems a lot of people are under the impression that they were crossing at the crosswalk there," he said, clarifying that Shea and his daughter were on the sidewalk when they were struck.
"They were on the sidewalk directly in front of the plaza trying to get to the crosswalk for the bus stop."
Insp. Scott Griffiths with Waterloo Regional Police Service told CBC News the charge laid is significant.
