Water main break on Papineau Avenue stalls access to Jacques-Cartier Bridge

Montreal's Papineau Avenue is closed between Ste-Catherine Street and René-Lévesque Boulevard for an undetermined period of time after a water main broke Thursday morning.
Police officers are on site to redirect traffic and are asking that drivers avoid the sector if possible.
In a statement to CBC News, the city says its teams are currently working to seal the breach, which is about 15 to 20 centimeters long, but did not provide an estimate for when repairs would be over.
The break is complicating access to the Jacques-Cartier Bridge connecting Montreal to the South Shore said Jean-Pierre Brabant, a spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), given that a section of De Lorimier Avenue is also closed for renovations.
Traffic to the bridge is being fed through Frontenac, Atateken, Dorion and Ste-Catherine streets, as well as de Maisonneuve Boulevard.
In August 2024, a major water main break just one block over produced a geyser and led to dozens of homes being flooded. The event raised questions around the city's aging infrastructure.
The city replaced a six-metre section of pipe a couple of months later.
