Another overpass in Saskatoon damaged by truck driver with 'over-height' load

Another day, another Saskatoon overpass damaged by a truck driver hauling a load too tall for clearance.
On Wednesday, a truck driver with an "over-height" load hit the 108th Street overpass in the Sutherland neighbourhood, causing debris to fall on the northbound lanes of Circle Drive, according to a City of Saskatoon news release.
The northbound curb lane of Circle Drive at the overpass is closed to traffic while crews clean up the area. Structural engineers assessed the damage and cleared the overpass for use, the city said.
Crews are removing loose concrete and other debris from the crash. Saskatoon police questioned the truck driver, the city said.
This is the second time a truck driver damaged an overpass in the city in a week. Last Thursday, a semi hauling a heavy-duty Caterpillar track hoe on a trailer hit the overpass at Highway 11 and Circle Drive South.
Eastbound traffic on that overpass is still down to one lane as crews repair the damage.
The city's director of technical services Dan Willems mentioned the 108th Street overpass last week while talking to reporters about the first overpass crash.
"The next one that you would hit if you were just borderline near this clearance level is 108th Street over Circle, which has a glass jaw," Willems said on March 6.
"Actually, if it would have taken a hit like this, it may have knocked the whole thing down."
Last year city council made a traffic bylaw amendment that lets the city seek cost recovery for damages to its property directly through the provincial court, instead of through civil litigation. This gives the city the power to seek fines of up to $10,000 for a driver and $25,000 for a company.

N.B. Power is in front of the New Brunswick Energy and utilities board seeking approval to raise its rates by 4.75 per cent this year, but the utility's plans to follow that with a 6.5 per cent increase next year and another 6.5 per cent increase the year after have been raising their own set of questions..
