After an updated count, Élections Québec says David Tordjman has won the mayoral race in Côte Saint-Luc, narrowly defeating longtime incumbent Mitchell Brownstein by a single vote.
Tordjman received 4,196 votes, or 50.01 per cent, compared with Brownstein’s 4,195 votes, or 49.99 per cent.
Voter turnout was 36.9 per cent, with 8,391 valid ballots cast and 229 rejected, out of 23,359 registered voters.
Tordjman served as city councillor for District 6 from 2017 to 2021, losing his bid for re-election in 2021. He is a civil engineer and currently general manager of the Nunavik Investment Corporation.
He has also worked extensively with First Nations communities on infrastructure and development projects.
He volunteers as president of the Friendship Circle of Montreal, supporting children and young adults with disabilities.
Brownstein, a lawyer, was first elected to city council in 1990 and became mayor in 2016.
In a statement released late Monday, Lawrence Bergman, who headed Brownstein's campaign, said Brownstein will be requesting a recount.
Bergman said Brownstein was ahead by 50 votes Sunday evening, but then on Monday, he lost 38 while Tordjman gained 13 "which does not match our figures."
He said no further statements will be made until the request for a recount is heard.
An Élections Québec spokesperson said there is no automatic recount process for close races, but that candidates can request a recount within four days of the election results being certified.
