U.S. won’t tolerate illegal entry, abuse of visas, or violation of law, says U.S. Embassy in India

U.S. Embassy warns against visa abuse and illegal entry, sparking discussion on strict immigration rules in America.

The United States “will not tolerate abuse of visas and violation of U.S. law”, the U.S. Embassy said on Tuesday (June 10, 2025). The remarks came a day after a video shared online showed an Indian student being restrained by security personnel at the Newark Liberty International Airport, which prompted discussion on the strict immigration rules prevailing in the U.S.

“The United States continues to welcome legitimate travelers to our country. However, there is no right to visit the United States. We cannot and will not tolerate illegal entry, abuse of visas, or the violation of U.S. law,” the U.S. Embassy said in an announcement shared on social media platform X.

Official sources here said that the issue of the Indian student being dealt with by security personnel at Newark airport has been raised formally by the Ministry of External Affairs with the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. The Indian Embassy in Washington DC and  the Indian Consulate in New York are also in contact with the American authorities regarding the case. The Hindu was told that the details of the case were yet to be fully known.

“We have so far not received any details about the incident or the circumstance, the flight he had to board or boarded, and his final destination. We continue to follow the matter,” an official said on Tuesday (June 10, 2025).

The video that went viral was shared by Kunal Jain, a non-resident Indian who filmed a young Indian student “being deported from Newark Airport” on Sunday night. Mr. Jain said the student, who appeared to be from Haryana, was “handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal”. “He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy,” he added.

Visuals of shackled Indian citizens were circulated when several hundred Indians were repatriated from the U.S. earlier this year in special flights. “From January 2025 till date, a total of 388 Indian nationals have been deported to India from the United States. Of these, 333 Indian nationals, after verification, were deported to India directly from the United States. Separately, the U.S. deported 55 Indian nationals through Panama,” External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had said in answer to a question in the Rajya Sabha on March 13.
