President Donald Trump said on March 9 that he was "disappointed" by the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the supreme leader of Iran who was killed days earlier, as his father’s successor.
"I was disappointed because we think it's going to lead to just more of the same problem for the country," Trump said during a news conference in Doral, Florida. "So I was disappointed to see their choice."
As the United States-Israeli war on Iran entered its 10th day, Khamenei, 56, a Shi'ite cleric and the son of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was pronounced the new leader.
The U.S. sanctioned Mojtaba Khamenei in 2019 for representing his father to advance his "destabilizing regional ambitions and oppressive domestic objectives," according to a 2019 release from the U.S. Treasury Department.
He represented his father in an official capacity despite never being elected or appointed to a government position and worked closely with the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) and the Basij Resistance Force (Basij), a paramilitary force, the U.S. government stated in its reason for sanctioning him.
