Here are five things you need to know this morning.
Japan details US$36 billion in U.S. investment: Japan plans to invest up to US$36 billion in American oil, gas and critical mineral projects. This is the first set of its $550 billion commitment under the trade agreement struck with the U.S. The investments include a natural gas facility in Ohio, where Japan is expected to invest up to $33 billion. The announcement comes weeks before Japan’s prime minister is set to meet with U.S. President Trump in Washington.
Power Corp. names new CEO: Power Corp. has appointed former IGM Financial chief executive James O’Sullivan as its new President and CEO. O’Sullivan will succeed Jeffrey Orr, who will become vice chair of the company. Power says the leadership changes are part of a well-planned and robust succession-planning process. The new leadership will be effective from July this year.
Setback for Northern Dynasty: Shares of Northern Dynasty Minerals plunged by as much as 40 per cent in the premarket after the Vancouver-based miner announced that the U.S. Department of Justice had filed a brief in Federal Court related to the veto in place on the company’s proposed Pebble mine in Alaska. CEO Ron Thiessen says: “We find it surprising that despite the Executive Orders and the many statements made by the administration related to Alaskan development, pro-energy, pro-critical metals, pro- defense and military support, removing roadblocks to permitting, on the need for copper, etc., this EPA would choose to defend the unlawful Obama-Biden veto.”
Mining companies dominate TSX Venture 50: The latest edition of the TSX Venture 50 list shows investors were flocking to miners as precious metal prices skyrocket. The TSX Venture 50 list is an annual ranking of top-performing companies on Canada’s main exchange for smaller companies. This year 48 mining companies made it onto the list. We’ll find out more when we speak with Robert Peterman, chief commercial officer at TSX & Global Capital Formation, at 11:30 am eastern time.
