Teen, 14, arrested in fatal stabbing of woman in North York parking lot: police

A 14-year-old has been arrested in the fatal stabbing of a woman in a North York parking lot last Thursday, Toronto police say.

Toronto police said in a news release that the teenager was arrested Sunday and charged with second-degree murder, following a coordinated effort by multiple police units.

He was wanted for an "unprovoked" attack on Shahnaz Pestonji, 71, of Toronto, on Thursday at about 9:37 a.m. in the area of Parkway Forest Drive and Sheppard Avenue E.

Pestonji was loading groceries into her car when she was attacked, police said.

When officers arrived, they found her with stab wounds. She was taken to hospital, where she died.

Police said they believe that the incident was "a robbery that escalated into a deadly attack."

Pestonji's family told CBC Toronto that she was a retired nurse, a wife, a grandmother and a mom. They said Thursdays were her grocery shopping days.
