Surveillance cameras fixed in 179 private buses in Coimbatore
A total of 179 private buses that operate in Coimbatore and mofussil buses that ply to other destinations from the city have been fitted with CCTV cameras.
Coimbatore City Police Commissioner V. Balakrishnan carried out surprise checks of private buses around 7.45 p.m. on Monday.
According to the police, there are 149 private buses that operate in the city. Out of these, 129 have been fitted with surveillance cameras. Of the 107 mofussil buses that operate between Coimbatore and other cities, 50 have been fitted with CCTV cameras.
The number of cameras fitted on these buses ranged from five to seven, covering front view, rear view doors, driver’s seat and passenger seats.
The police had held a meeting with operators of private buses and instructed them to fix surveillance cameras. The initiative is to ensure safety of passengers and prevent and detect crimes such as pickpocketing, chain snatching and crime against women.
The police said these cameras would also help check the conduct of the crew and their adherence to traffic rules.
The police have given three days’ time to the owners of the remaining private buses to have CCTV cameras fixed in their vehicles.
