More snow is on the way for Thunder Bay, Ont., and surrounding areas and that means some students in the region are having a snow day.
Student Transportation Services of Thunder Bay issued rural school bus route cancellations Tuesday morning just after 7:00 a.m. ET due to poor weather and road conditions.
As well, a number of public schools are closed for the day:
All Thunder Bay Catholic, French Catholic, and French Public schools are open.
East of the city, the Superior Greenstone District School Board says about 16 bus routes have been cancelled for the day.
Those routes service schools in Dorion, Red Rock, Nipigon, Schreiber, Terrace Bay, and Marathon.
Algoma and Huron-Superior Transportation Services have cancelled school bus routes in the White River area, but schools remain open.
Further west, the Northwestern Ontario Student Services Consortium said all buses are running today, but delays are possible this morning due to weather and road conditions.
Environment Canada issued a yellow-coded snowfall warning for Thunder Bay and surrounding areas Monday afternoon.
The agency said an Alberta clipper system is making its way over the region, bringing with it 15 to 25 centimetres of snow, mixed with wind gusts of up to 60 kilometres per hour.
Conditions are expected to improve from west to east by Tuesday evening.
The snowfall warning is in effect for Thunder Bay, stretching east to Nipigon, Schreiber, and Marathon areas.
Environment Canada has also issued a special weather statement for surrounding areas, covering Kakabeka, Atikokan, Greenstone, Ignace and White River. Those areas are expecting 10 to 15 cm of snow, according to the agency.
Meanwhile, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Kenora, Ont., are urging people to use extra caution on Highway 17 due to icy and snow-covered conditions.
