Shura Council participates in UN, IPU Joint Session

The Shura Council participated in the annual joint parliamentary hearing session between the United Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which was held in New York, USA, under the title "Building Political Support and Comprehensive Responses to Sustainable Recovery". The Shura Council was represented in the session by members of the Council HE Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi and HE Abdullah bin Jaber bin Mohamed Al Libda. The two-day session discussed growing economic inequalities as a threat to sustainable development, youth inclusion, the need for intergenerational justice, and the rights of indigenous peoples, migrants, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. The session also touched on the issue of equality between men and women in decision-making as a key element in sustainable recovery. Within the framework of this theme, a number of questions were raised about the representation of women and equal opportunities, and how to build a stronger partnership between the genders in politics and society. In this context, HE Ahmed bin Hitmi Al-Hitmi reviewed the remarkable development accomplished by the State of Qatar in achieving the goals associated with achieving gender equality, empowering women and girls, working to achieve gender equality and realizing womens human rights and empowerment through all elements of the sustainable development plan. He pointed out that the State of Qatar has adopted a clear policy to promote and empower women in various fields, which is included in the Qatar National Vision 2030, highlighting the important role of the Shura Council as a legislative authority in this regard. The session's works also included a special briefing on the topic "Parliaments in the United Nations for a more effective multilateralism to address global challenges", while another topic dealt with "fulfilling the commitments of climate change". In this context, HE Abdullah bin Jaber bin Mohamed Al Libda touched on the State of Qatar's interest in the issue of the environment and climate change, referring to the country's efforts to achieve its ambitious and realistic goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors. He explained that the issue of climate change is a national priority for the State of Qatar, based on the fact that climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the world. He pointed in this regard to the role of the Shura Council in supporting and strengthening national efforts to confront climate change.Mr. Duarte Pacheco The session began with welcoming speeches delivered by HE the President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly Abdullah Shahid and HE President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
