A small northeastern Saskatchewan community is reeling after a man was arrested and charged with killing his wife.
Kevin Searcy, 68, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife Diane Searcy, 69, in Snowden, about 200 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
RCMP said in a news release that officers were called to the couple’s home for a wellness check around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, they found Diane Searcy dead at the scene. Kevin Searcy was arrested at the home.
“It’s quite a shock,” said neighbour Larry McCamon. “She had really bad dementia. She wasn’t even sure what was going on most of the time, the last time I saw her anyway. And [Kevin] had said she had dementia.”
McCamon said Kevin was known as a kind and helpful neighbour who took care of his wife as her condition worsened.
“They used to walk around the village all the time and then slowly she just didn’t come out,” he said. “The last time I saw Diane, she was picking up imaginary stuff off the ground. I feel bad for him. I feel bad for her.”
RCMP major crimes continues to investigate.
Kevin Searcy was scheduled to appear in Melfort provincial court on Friday morning.
