Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., 72, had surgery Tuesday, March 10 on his rotator cuff, a spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY.
The Health and Human Services Department chief "plans to return to the office this Monday,” the HHS spokesperson said. The National Review was first to report the news.
The spokesperson did not specify what injury or condition prompted the operation, but the Mayo Clinic says injuries to the rotator cuff, a group of shoulder joint muscles and tendons, are common and increase with age.
While many people with rotator cuff problems can manage their symptoms with physical therapy exercises that improve flexibility and strength, rotator cuff tears sometimes occur from a single injury, according to the clinic.
"In those circumstances, people should seek medical advice quickly because they might need surgery," the Mayo Clinic notes.
