Several residential areas continue to bear the brunt of the recent spell of heavy rain in the city.
Residents of Balaji Avenue, Visalatchi Avenue, and Ganapathy Nagar in Kambarasanpettai, in Andanallur block in Tiruchi, complained of flooding. Empty plots and areas surrounding the residential colonies have been flooded, causing safety and health concerns among the residents. The roads that were dug up in the area have not been repaired. These dug up portions are now filled with water causing accidents. Two-wheeler riders are having a tough time negotiating the slippery roads and vehicles have been caught in the pits as well, complained residents.
Residents complained that flooding rendered the hospitals out of bounds for them. A section of residents from Balaji Avenue complained that autorickshaw drivers were demanding more because of the poor condition of the road. It was also now taking longer to reach the hospitals as people had to take the Tiruchi-Karur national highway to get a ride. Lack of street lights in the area worsened the problem.
“My six-year-old son has typhoid. To reach the hospital., we have to go to the main road, but travelling along the damaged roads becomes a problem. Autorickshaw drivers are charging more to come to Balaji Avenue. We have made several complaints to the authorities to no avail,” said M. Sridevi, a resident.
“We are waiting for the pathways to dry up so that we can remedy the situation in Kambararasanpettai. We will commence paving roads when the funds are allocated,” said M. Shanmugam, Block Development Officer, Andanallur.
