REM's Deux-Montagnes branch finally opens, rides will be free all weekend
CBC
The much anticipated branch of the REM connecting Deux-Montagnes to downtown Montreal will open after six years in the making.
The new line consists of 14 new stations that will be inaugurated among elected officials Friday, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, Premier François Legault and Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada.
Here are the 14 new stations:
To mark the occasion, the entire REM network will be free this weekend. However, commuters won’t be able to take the Metro or buses due to the upcoming strike set for Saturday and Sunday.
Exceptionally, pets won’t be allowed on the REM during the open house weekend due to the traffic expected.
The latest branch of the REM will start in Deux-Montagnes, cross Laval and the West Island before running through the Mount Royal tunnel into downtown. Riders on that branch will also be able to continue toward the South Shore branch, which was inaugurated in the summer of 2023.
CDPQ Infra estimates that during the morning rush hour, the branch will eventually be able to transport more than 42,000 people between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.
