A 42-year-old Regina man has been arrested and charged in the death of Tanya Myers, who was a passenger in an SUV when she was shot and killed on a highway near Weyburn, Sask., this fall.
Chris Fahlman is charged with manslaughter with a firearm, careless use of a firearm, carrying a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence and being in a vehicle knowing there's a firearm inside.
He appeared virtually in Regina provincial court Monday, and the judge adjourned the matter to Tuesday.
RCMP Insp. Ashley St. Germaine said police are not looking for another suspect in the case, but declined to say what information led to Fahlman's arrest, if he was known to police and where the shot that killed Myers was fired from.
St. Germaine confirmed that Fahlman was arrested in Regina Saturday, after a seven-week-long investigation by the RCMP major crimes unit.
"We are not aware of any direct connection between the accused and the occupants and the two vehicles that were struck," Germaine told a virtual news conference.
Myers, 44, was travelling in one of two vehicles that was hit by bullets while driving on Highway 39 just northwest of Weyburn on the evening of Sept. 12.
The shooting put people living in the city and the surrounding area on edge. Some local residents told CBC they were avoiding driving on the portion of Highway 39 where Myers died, scared the shooter might strike again.
Others speculated it was a hunting accident turned deadly, a theory St. Germaine said she couldn't address.
"I don't have any information relating to him hunting in the area or poaching specifically."
Andrea Morrice was driving the SUV Myers was shot in, and said police told her Saturday about Fahlman's arrest.
"All along I thought that when someone was found I would be forgiving easily, thinking it would be someone who just didn't know any better," Morrice said.
Instead, Morrice said she's angry, particularly after looking at Fahlman's Facebook page and comments made about the shooting, including one that reposted an RCMP post about the incident with the comment, "This is absolutely disgusting… What is this world coming to!!!"
"I cannot wait for the court proceedings to get underway so we can all find out more details as to what happened that night and get the closure that we need," Morrice said.
