Quebec police crack down on Rizzuto crime family in slew of arrests
CBC
Montreal and provincial police have made several arrests Thursday morning targeting the Rizzuto family in the Montreal area, Radio-Canada is reporting.
The major police operation aims to end the activities of what was once the most influential and dangerous criminal organization in Canada, led by the late Mafia leader Vito Rizzuto.
Nearly 150 police officers were deployed to carry out arrests in Montreal, Laval, Blainville, Shefford, Saint-Lazare, Repentigny, Quebec City and Rosemère, police said in a news statement.
Leonardo Rizzuto was arrested at his home in Laval around 6:30 a.m., Radio-Canada reported. His alleged co-leader, Stefano Sollecito, was also handcuffed at his private residence.
Other alleged members of the organized crime group, Pietro D'Adamo and Davide Barberio, are among the dozen suspects targeted by the police, according to Radio-Canada.
Montreal police are scheduled to hold a news conference regarding the operation later this morning.
Some of those arrested are expected to appear at the Montreal courthouse this afternoon and face a host of charges.
André Cédilot, a former justice reporter at La Presse and the author of Mafia Inc., says the raid definitely marks the end of the Rizzuto crime family.
"There are no successors within the Rizzuto family, but we can't say it's the end of the Sicilian clan because there are still big players left not only in Montreal, but also in Toronto," Cédilot said.
