PM Modi to launch 5G internet services on October 1

The Department of Telecom, or DoT, had earlier announced that the high-speed 5G internet would be launched in 13 cities in the first phase.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will roll-out 5G services in India on October 1 at the India Mobile Congress event. He will be present at the event during the launch.

According to its official website, India Mobile Congress (IMC) is the largest telecom, media, and technology forum in Asia, jointly organised by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

The Department of Telecom, or DoT, had earlier announced that the high-speed 5G internet would be launched in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune in the first phase.

Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw last week downplayed apprehensions over the radiation impact of 5G. “The radiation from 5G is much below the WHO-recommended levels,” he said.

During an interactive session with students, the minister said the Centre has asked telecom operators to improve the quality of their service, and added that a 5G lab has been developed at IIT-Madras.

“We expect an investment of around Rs 2.5-3 lakh crore to come into the industry. Rs 3 lakh crore is a big investment. This is also leading to good employment generation. Our estimate is 5G will reach almost all parts of the country in the next 2-3 years,” news agency PTI quoted Vishnaw as saying in August.
