Police have arrested a driver who allegedly removed his licence plate and hid it in the trunk of the vehicle before he fled a fatal hit and run in Mississauga.
A 46-year-old Mississauga man was arrested Tuesday after an "intensive" investigation, Peel Regional Police said in a news release Wednesday.
Police said Santosh Kumar Patra, 56, of Mississauga was killed in the collision on Friday around 9 p.m.
According to police, a Mini Cooper struck and killed Patra at the intersection of Eglinton Avenue W. and Fallingbrook Drive. Police said the driver fled the scene without stopping to help the victim.
Investigators canvassed the area after the collision and found CCTV video that shows a man removing the rear licence plate of his vehicle and concealing it in the trunk before fleeing.
The driver has been charged with failure to stop at scene of accident resulting in death. His first court appearance is set for Dec. 22 in Brampton.
“An innocent member of our community lost their life due to the reckless actions of an individual — who we will hold fully accountable," Peel police Deputy Chief Marc Andrews said in the release.
Police said information from the public helped officers to identify the driver. Anyone else who has information, or who witnessed the collision, is urged to come forward to police.
