Oswaldo Cabrera returns to lineup with key homer as Yankees start Guardians doubleheader with win
NY Post
CLEVELAND — Oswaldo Cabrera got off to a hot start to the season, then spent this week being frozen out by the Marlins’ throwing a trio of left-handed starters against the Yankees.
The third baseman returned to the lineup Saturday and picked up where he left off.
On a day when the Yankees wasted some prime scoring chances early and then hung on for dear life late, Cabrera got the job done with a two-run homer that proved to be the difference in a 3-2 win over the Guardians in the first game of a doubleheader at Progressive Field.
Cabrera’s third home run in his 10th game of the season — which came after he fouled off a bunt attempt on the first pitch of the at-bat with no outs and a runner on second — put the Yankees ahead 3-0 in the sixth inning.
From there, the Guardians pushed across a pair of runs charged to Clarke Schmidt before the Yankees bullpen — Caleb Ferguson, Ian Hamilton (two innings) and Clay Holmes — staved off a comeback.
“Talk about somebody that comes to the field every day and gives everything he has — the definition is Oswaldo Cabrera,” catcher Jose Trevino said. “Watching him grow, watching him come up, watching him play the game, how he handles himself, how he handles his teammates, it’s top of the charts for me.”
PHILADELPHIA — The easy thing is to feed the beast. There is some rawness and some rancor in this series now. There are some hard feelings and some hurt egos. The Knicks are a team forged by ferocity, tempered by toughness, and now there is a silly sense in the air that if they don’t get even with Joel Embiid, Corleone-style, that maybe they aren’t as stolid as we thought.
WASHINGTON — The NHL’s Public Enemy No. 1 took a seat in his stall in the back corner of the room following his team’s optional practice Saturday and drew chuckles from the assembled audience by spinning a tale about being killed 68 times in Halo by Chris Kreider following the previous night’s Game 3.
