The 98th Academy Awards are honoring the best of film tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with Conan O’Brien returning as host. Follow live updates.
• Top contenders: Ryan Coogler won the best original screenplay Oscar for his vampire horror hybrid, “Sinners,” while Hollywood vet Paul Thomas Anderson won the adapted screenplay award for “One Battle After Another.” The two films will face off in the best picture category. • Standout moments: Late night legend Conan O’Brien has looked at home as the evening’s host, delivering plenty of quips and some pointed political commentary. A moving In Memoriam segment paid tribute to Rob Reiner and his wife, as well as Diane Keaton, Catherine O’Hara and Robert Redford. • More notable wins: Amy Madigan won the first award of the night for her so-scary-it’s-funny role in “Weapons.” Sean Penn was a no-show for his supporting actor trophy — his third career Oscar. • Red carpet: Stars stopped to chat with CNN and Variety as they made their grand entrances. Check out some of the night’s most striking looks in the photo gallery above. Netflix’s “All the Empty Rooms” took home the Oscar for best documentary short film. Filmmakers Joshua Seftel and Conall Jones took the time during their acceptance speech to highlight the stories of children killed in school shootings — the central theme in the winning film.
