Ontario outlines 'plan to catch up' for students affected by COVID-19 pandemic

Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced Ontario's "plan to catch up" for students who fell behind during the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday, which mainly include a litany of funding announcements the province has made previously.
The plan includes fives pillars, the first of which is a commitment to keep students in class for in-person learning.
"It is so consequential to children's mental and physical health," Lecce said at a news conference in Ajax.

The announcement comes amid a backdrop of contract negotiations between the government and education unions.
Lecce said that any deal with the unions will be "voluntary" in response to questions from reporters about whether the government is considering legislation that would designate teachers and other school staff essential workers.
