A nurse denied several requests to take a sick eight-year-old migrant girl to the hospital the same day the child died in U.S. Border Patrol custody in Texas earlier this month, federal investigators said Thursday.
Anadith Tanay Reyes Alvarez, who suffered from sickle cell anemia and heart disease, died on May 17 after she and her family spent over a week in Border Patrol custody, despite agency rules instructing agents to hold detainees for no longer than three days.
While the death is still being investigated by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Border Patrol's umbrella agency, preliminary findings have raised serious questions about why the family was held for so long, and why Reyes Alvarez was not transferred to a hospital after multiple instances in which she and her mother sought medical attention.

Another winter storm may be headed toward the East Coast of the United States this weekend, on the heels of a powerful and deadly system that blanketed huge swaths of the country in snow and ice. The effects of that original storm have lingered for many areas in its path, and will likely remain as repeated bouts of Arctic air plunge downward from Canada and drive temperatures below freezing. Washington — The Senate is set to take a procedural vote Thursday morning on a package to fund the remaining government agencies and programs, with less than two days to avoid a partial government shutdown. But Democrats say they won't allow the package to move forward without reforms to immigration enforcement. Caitlin Huey-Burns contributed to this report.
