Several people were evacuated Friday from a ferry travelling between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island after a fire in the vessel's engine room.
The fire broke out on board the MV Holiday Island around 11 a.m. AT, about an hour into its crossing from Caribou, N.S., to Wood Islands, P.E.I.
Don Cormier, the vice-president for Northumberland Ferries, said the fire was extinguished and there were no injuries to passenger or crew. The release did not say how many people were on board the vessel.
"Ship's crew and safety systems contained the fire," Cormier said in a news release. "Captain took necessary precautions and dropped both anchors and directed the ship onto a soft shoal outside the harbour entrance to Wood Islands."
He said passengers taken safely ashore with the help of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, the coast guard and local authorities. Multiple fire departments responded to the scene.
The news release said the rest of the day's crossings had been cancelled.
