All water fixtures and the water fountain at the Kaw Tay Whee school in Dettah, N.W.T., are out of service after the territory found elevated levels of lead in multiple classroom sinks.
The N.W.T.’s office of the chief public health officer issued a public health order for the school and said water services will only resume once new safety systems are in place and confirmed to meet proper health standards.
In a news release Tuesday night, the government of the Northwest Territories wrote that safe alternative water sources are being provided to staff and students. The territory is working to replace affected taps and water fixtures and installing under-sink filters.
Water testing at Kaw Tay Whee School is part of a territory-wide school testing protocol that also found elevated levels of lead at three Yellowknife schools earlier this year.
Students and staff can again consume water at Range Lake North School and École William McDonald in Yellowknife after water fixtures were replaced and filters installed. N.J. Macpherson continues to be under a do not consume order for its water.
Tuesday’s news release said while the water fountain at Kaw Tay Whee School tested to be safe, it will also be out of service as a precaution.
The entire water system at the school is undergoing a full assessment.
