The plant entered trial operational phase to serve more than 200,000 people in the cities of Al Khor and Al Thakhira in the North of Qatar.

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) Monday announced the completion of the main components of the New Al Khor and Al Thakhira Sewage Treatment Works (STW) project. The plant entered trial operational phase to serve more than 200,000 people in the cities of Al Khor and Al Thakhira in the North of Qatar.

On this occasion, Eng. Khalid Saif Al Khayareen, Manager of the Drainage Networks Projects Department at Ashghal, pointed out the importance of this achievement, stating that the project is one of the biggest drainage projects that serve Al Khor and Al Thakhira. Eng. Al Khayareen explained that the project aims to provide effective and sustainable solutions to preserve the environment and improve environmental conditions in these areas, by establishing a new and advanced plant that uses the latest global systems for wastewater treatment in order to produce treated water that meets the highest international environmental specifications and standards.

The completion of the project led to decommissioning the old and temporary treatment plants with limited capacity. The flows were diverted from the existing temporary treatment plant in Al Thakhira which has been put out of service at the end of 2020. Flows were also diverted from the old treatment plant in Al Khor, which was decommissioned during the third quarter of 2021.

For this part, Eng. Abdulrahman Mohammed Al-Sulaiti, Acting Head of the Treatment Plants Projects and Treated Water Networks Section, said that Al Khor and Al Thakhira STW was designed and built with a capacity of 56,200 m3 per day, with the aim of treating wastewater flows coming from the collection areas in Al Khor and Al Thakhira. The plant works using the latest advanced treatment technologies such as sequential batch reactors for biological treatment, followed by ultra-filtration, ultra-violet and chlorination systems for disinfection and tertiary treatment.
