NCAA championship win helped Zac Jones make his Rangers decision

If there was any lingering doubt, Saturday erased it. Like George Costanza, Zac Jones wanted to go out on top, and he did as Massachusetts won the NCAA hockey title. There was nothing left to prove in college.
“Winning a national championship does that,” the former UMass star defenseman said on Friday following Rangers practice, in his first public comments since becoming a pro. “I wanted a new challenge. To come in and be around a veteran group of players like the guys that are here and learn from these guys and try to soak in as much as I can these next few weeks, it’s something that made me want to come and made me want to sign instead of going back to college.” It is uncertain if Jones will get in a game this year, with just 13 contests remaining and the Rangers trailing the Bruins by four points for the last East Division playoff spot. A third-round pick by the Rangers in 2019, Jones agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract that carries an $832,500 cap hit at the NHL level and $70,000 in the AHL with a $92,500 signing bonus, The Post’s Mollie Walker reported.More Related News
