Controversy erupts over West Bengal Minister Firhad Hakim's remarks on becoming majority, sparking accusations of inciting communal hatred.
A fresh controversy has erupted over remarks of West Bengal Minister and Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor Firhad Hakim who is heard saying in a video that soon “we will become majority”.
In a video that has surfaced on social media the prominent Trinamool Congress leader is saying that by the “grace of Allah we will soon become majority”.
“We come from such a community, that in West Bengal we are 33%, and across the country, we are only 17% and we are called minority community in India. But we do consider ourselves as a minority. But in the coming days, we will no longer remain a minority. We believe that if Allah has grace on us and education is with us then we will become the majority,” Mr. Hakim is heard saying in a video. It is not clear when the Minister made the remarks.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership reacted sharply to the remarks and accused the Kolkata Mayor of “inciting communal hatred and pushing a dangerous agenda”.
“Pure venom from the Kolkata Mayor, Trinamool’s Firhad Hakim openly inciting communal hatred and pushing a dangerous agenda. This isn’t just hate speech — it’s a blueprint for creating a Bangladesh-type situation in India. Why is the INDI Alliance silent? I challenge them to voice their opinion on this,” West Bengal State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar posted on social media.
Several other BJP leaders took objection to the remark and said that not only Mr. Hakim but several other leaders of the ruling party are making similar remarks.
