Mount Pearl issues traffic notice as customers show up in droves for Taco Bell

The chase for a non-traditional holiday feast prompted the City of Mount Pearl to issue a traffic notice for the area of Commonwealth Avenue on Saturday.
The reason? Taco Bell's newest location had its grand opening, and hundreds were eager to get a taste of the popular American fast-food chain after years of going without in Newfoundland and Labrador.
In a social media post, the city advised drivers to keep their “holiday spirit intact” as the line of vehicles stretched from the restaurant's drive-thru window down Commonwealth Avenue and to the Smallwood Drive intersection.
“The newest spot in town is officially open — and yes, the lineup looks longer than Santa’s sleigh route,” the city wrote.
Franchise owner Kiran Heladiya told CBC News the store served almost 700 people on opening day. Sunday was no different. The drive-thru line was full before the restaurant opened at 10:30 a.m. N.T.
Kesten Turpin was one of those early customers. He spent more than an hour in line.
“I just never had it before, and the hype, I had to try it out,” Turpin told CBC News. ”It’s a bit of fun.”
Marcus Fitzgerald had his hands full of food as he left Taco Bell on Sunday. When he found out Taco Bell was coming to Newfoundland and Labrador, Fitzgerald said he couldn’t contain his excitement.
“I went insane,” Fitzgerald said. “We got a crunch wrap supreme and some cinnamon twists.”
Other customers mentioned that their love and enthusiasm for the restaurant come from trips down south or to nearby Halifax.
