Storms spawned 14 twisters in the U.S. March 5 -7, killing eight, including four in Michigan, the deadliest tornado day in the state in 46 years.
At least 13 tornadoes were spun up by powerful storms crossing the United States between March 5 and 7, including a Michigan storm that spawned four deadly twisters on March 6.
One of the Michigan tornadoes was an EF-3, becoming the state's earliest EF-3 on record, the National Weather Service said in preliminary reports. The twisters killed at least four, also making it the state's deadliest tornado day in 46 years, since five people died on May 13, 1980, according to weather service records.
Winds in the EF-3 peaked at an estimated 160 mph, the weather service said after preliminary damage surveys. The earliest EF-3 previously on record occurred in Ann Arbor, Michigan on March 15, 2012.
Elsewhere across the central U.S. between March 5 and 7, at least five other tornadoes were documented. Tornadoes also were reported in Arkansas, Texas, Kentucky and in Oklahoma, where four people died. In total, tornadoes killed at least eight and injured 26 over three days between March 5 and 7, the weather service said.
In Michigan, the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported 12-year-old Silas Anderson was killed in Milton Township when a tornado damaged a home. After being reported missing, the boy was found and the family administered first aid until he was taken to a local hospital where he died.
