SINGAPORE – Mr Suresh Mulchand left school at 16 to work and support his family.
His father, who ran a department store in Bras Basah Road in the 1970s, had died, and the business later went bust.
With the family left struggling, Mr Mulchand began working for one of his father’s former employees as a tailor.
“We went from being very well off to virtually nothing and my mother was left carrying the weight of the bankruptcy, so I had to step up,” said the 57-year-old.
“There was no cushion, no safety net. You either figured it out or you didn’t.”
He tried several other jobs – from selling jet skis to working in real estate – before eventually returning to tailoring.
