Colorado authorities have identified the 10 people killed at a Boulder supermarket and vowed to hold accountable the accused gunman, charging him with 10 counts of murder in Monday's rampage.
The 21-year-old accused gunman, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, was charged with 10 counts of murder in the first degree, Police Chief Maris Herold said. He was being treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound, and Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty expected him to be transferred to a jail later Tuesday. The district attorney said he believed the suspect acted alone and that the community was safe.Ashley White received her earliest combat action badge from the United States Army soon after the first lieutenant arrived in Afghanistan. The silver military award, recognizing soldiers who've been personally engaged by an attacker during conflict, was considered an achievement in and of itself as well as an affirming rite of passage for the newly deployed. White had earned it for using her own body to shield a group of civilian women and children from gunfire that broke out in the midst of her third mission in Kandahar province. All of them survived. She never mentioned the badge to anyone in her battalion.
