A federal judge has barred President Donald Trump’s administration from searching through materials the FBI seized during a January raid of a Washington Post reporter’s Virginia home as part of a national security leak investigation.
The agency executed a search warrant at reporter Hannah Natanson’s home on Jan. 14 as part of a probe into Aurelio Perez-Lugones, a government contractor accused of illegally retaining classified documents. Materials including a phone and both a work and personal laptop were seized in the search.
Judge William Porter’s Feb. 24 order said the court would review the materials to determine what, if any, content is relevant to the leak investigation.
Allowing the government to do so “is the equivalent of leaving the government’s fox in charge of the Washington Post’s henhouse,” Porter wrote.
He did not order the materials to be returned to Natanson.
