In his second season as skipper of Gujarat Titans, Shubman Gill has thoroughly impressed.

As opening batter alongside B. Sai Sudharsan, he has been in imperious touch, collecting 508 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 152.55 with as many as five half-centuries. When he is making the manoeuvres on the field to aid his bowlers, too, Gill has looked at ease with the extra responsibility. It helps, of course, that he has a formidable bowling attack at his command.

If the talk about Gill’s likely ascent to captaincy of the Indian Test team materialises in the wake of Rohit Sharma’s retirement last week, the 25-year-old’s leadership attributes will only invite sharper focus in the days to follow.

Parthiv Patel, assistant coach of Gujarat Titans, didn’t weigh in on the broader discussion about the Indian team, but gave a ringing endorsement of Gill’s contribution as the captain of the IPL franchise nonetheless.

“Gill has been fantastic as captain. The way he’s been around with the group, I don’t need to mention how well he’s batting right now and the way he’s handling the situation,” Parthiv said on the eve of GT’s match against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

“He’s scoring a lot of runs, he’s been very good, proactive on the field. Off the field also, he spends a lot of time with young players. I’ve said this before too, you can feel that Gill is the captain in the dressing room, that’s what you want in a leader”.
